This was the Devotional from Tides yesterday which concerns Joy, as we have been discussing in Philippians.

Faith That Works: James and 1 Peter

JAMES 1:1–4
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,
 
To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations:
 
Greetings.
 
2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

REFLECT  Faith Tested: Joy in Trials
This is, surely, one of those Bible passages that could potentially leave some people bewildered. Consider it joy when I face trials…? Who rejoices in suffering? It’s important to put a few things in order as we begin to process this idea in Christianity.
 
First things first: we all know there will be trials in life. Some will be a direct result of a choice to follow Jesus, in the form of persecution. Others will be part of the universal experience of humanity and creation, both desperately afflicted by sin. The instruction to rejoice in trials is not suggesting that God rejoices in suffering. One of the most powerful images we see of Jesus in the gospels, for me, is found in John 11, when he sees Mary and others weeping with grief. His instinct, his innate nature, is to weep with them. We worship a God who weeps over the pain of humanity.
 
It may also be tempting to assume that James, or God for that matter, expects us to laugh and smile gleefully throughout our suffering. Many would rightly see that as twisted and simply unrealistic. The practice of lament plays a significant role in Scripture, and we are encouraged to cast our anxieties on Jesus because he cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
 
What, then, can we take from this? We can consider it joy because we know that, in spite of our pain and suffering, God will not allow it to be without purpose. There is a strange power in a Christian consciously choosing to worship their way through life’s most difficult seasons. Many who have done so would testify that, as a result, their resilience and trust in Jesus have only grown stronger.
RESPOND We can all likely identify some kind of trial we are experiencing today. Can you make a conscious decision to pause, lay it at the feet of Jesus and carve out dedicated time to worship him in the midst of it?
