Beside The Burn
On Beside The Burn this week, we turn to Daniel and find out how we can find blessing as we live a second choice life.

Join me each week-day for a short devotional video including a bible reading and prayer to encourage us as we enter 2022.

The Book Of Daniel
Tomorrow I am going to include a link to a film based on the book of Daniel. I cannot recommend the film highly enough as an introduction to the story. You can watch a trailer for the film today and hopefully that will whet your appetite for tomorrow.

Let’s Pray For Moderator
Presbyteries will seek to elect a new Moderator of the General Assembly on 1 February. Pray for a successful outcome, and for the Moderator elect, as they will begin a journey of preparation for their new responsibilities in June.

Worship: Part of something bigger
‘Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples.’ Psalm 117:1.
As we worship today ask God to increase our awareness that we participate in the worship of the worldwide people of God.

Peter & Valerie Lockwood (global mission workers, Nepal)
Give thanks that the Lockwood family arrived safely back in Northern Ireland in December having completed their work in Nepal. Give thanks for their dedicated service with United Mission to Nepal and pray for them as they settle back here and undertake deputation.

South Sudan
Pray for the work and witness of the Presbyterian Church of South Sudan. Pray for those that are dependent on food aid and for the church as they seek to help. Pray too for peace, justice and political progress.

Beside The Burn
On Beside The Burn this week, This World Is Not My Home - Do you have a longing for a better place? All this week we examine what it means to be living in Exile with a strong desire for the promised land. Join me each week-day for a short devotional video including a bible reading and prayer to encourage us as we enter 2022.

Daniel
This week has been an introduction to the idea of Exile, next week we begin a series looking at Exile through the eyes of Daniel. In preparation for our series in Daniel, you might like to read the first 6 chapters and remember the stories from Sunday School.
You could also listen to Daniel being read in either the Contemporary English Version, the King James or the NIV by clicking on the videos below. It will take about an hour to listen to the whole book and about 30 minutes to listen to the first 6 chapters

Let’s Pray For Social Witness
Pray for comfort for those who mourn today. Pray that they will feel God’s presence, whether the loss is recent or more distant. Strengthen those whose loss was sudden, and those who foresaw the end and had to cope with the knowledge that time was short. May we all be aware of the sadness of others and support them.

Business
Pray for those who run their own businesses, especially those who find this time of year to be a difficult time, and those who continue to respond to pandemic restrictions. Pray that God would equip them with the strength, stamina and wisdom that they need at this time.

General Council
Pray for the various Task Groups appointed to carry forward work decided by the 2021 General Assembly. Remember especially one of those Task Groups, which is meeting during the incoming week - seeking to review PCI’s response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and discern theological, moral and spiritual principles to guide the Church in any similar situation which could arise in the future.

Council for Training in Ministry
The Assignments Panel assigns ministry students to congregations for placements and assistantships – a vital aspect of students’ preparation for ministry, providing valuable opportunities to learn alongside a supervising minister. Pray for the Panel as it meets on Thursday 20 January, that the Lord would guide its decisions.

World: “Follow your heart.”

A Prayer for a Fresh Start
God,
I’m excited for a new year, and I want to step into it with boldness and confidence. But if I’m being honest, I’m uncertain of what the year will hold—and that can feel unsettling.
Search me, God, and refresh my heart.
Please help me surrender my expectations for this year. Transform my mind as I draw near to You.
Search me, God, and align my heart with Yours.
As I pursue the plans You have for me, let me remember what You’ve already helped me overcome.
Search me, God, and heal my heart.
Whatever this year holds, I know You hold me. Nothing is impossible for You!
Restore me, God, and make me new.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Christian Unions Ireland
The prayer points for this week.

10 – 16 January
Our International Student Ministries Ireland Team is attending the Friends International Conference this week together with colleagues from across the UK & Ireland.  Pray for refreshment, inspiration, and a time to be encouraged in their work with international students in Belfast and Dublin.
Dóchas (NUI Galway) and University of Limerick CU are currently in the midst of organising Events Weeks which is a new endeavour for many students in those CUs. There will be a week in Galway followed by a week in Limerick and all the Relay Workers from CUI will be coming to speak. Pray the students and CUI workers would depend on God and be prayerful throughout it all.

TearFund Prayer
An old way to pray about today’s challenges
We are just into the new year, yet it can already feel overwhelming to look at the headlines in the news and think about how, as Christians, we should respond. One of the ways we can combat these feelings is to look to Christian spiritual practices that enable us to slow down and hear God’s voice, and to inspire us to take action. Practices such as Lectio Divina.
Lectio Divina (Holy Reading) is an ancient Bible-meditation practice (originating from the Hebraic tradition of the Shema), which involves listening with the heart. It allows us to focus on the text we are reading, to slow down and hear what God is wanting to say to us through the passage. It helps us hear specifically and individually from God through scripture, while being guided by the Holy Spirit.

Q) What Hope Does Everlasting Life Hold for Us?
A) It reminds us that this present fallen world is not all there is; soon we will live with and enjoy God forever in the new city, in the new heaven and the new earth, where we will be fully and forever freed from all sin and will inhabit renewed, resurrection bodies in a renewed, restored creation.
