Burnside Blog
Each week day this Blog contains prayer topics, articles,  a short devotional video and a Jigsaw.

This week we think about how we can talk about Jesus without sounding like an idiot, inspired by a recent seminar by Andy Bannister from Solas.

Let’s Pray For
  • Homelessness | Pray that God will watch over those who do not have a home and will sleep outside tonight. Pray for those who work among individuals on our streets, giving them food and shelter and assisting with health problems. Pray for wisdom and compassion for these agencies who actively seek to improve the lives of homeless people.
  • Business | Pray for those who run their own businesses, especially those who find this time of year to be a difficult time, following the Christmas period. Pray that God would equip them with the strength, stamina and wisdom that they need at this time.
  • General Council – Moderator-Designate | Next Tuesday, all of PCI’s 19 presbyteries will meet separately across Ireland to consider Rev Trevor Gribben, Clerk of the General Assembly, and Rev Richard Kerr, minister of Templepatrick, as Moderator-Designate, and ultimately Moderator from June’s General Assembly. Pray for Trevor and Richard as they continue to prepare themselves for what the Lord intends, and for members of presbytery as they prayerfully consider who to vote for.
  • Training in Ministry | Union College Management Committee meets on Monday 3 February. Pray for the Committee as it deals with the challenges of running what is actually a small university – staff and student recruitment, managing budgets, maintaining and enhancing an old building. Pray especially for its convener, Very Rev Dr John Kirkpatrick.

Let’s Pray For
  • Ballina & Killala | Give thanks for these vacant Home Mission congregations in the West of Ireland, and particularly for a recent meeting of the congregations to consider recommendations for a new way forward. Pray that, as these plans are developed and outworked, that it would lead to a revitalisation in the church in County Mayo in the coming years.
  • Sally Moore, community outreach worker, Second Randalstown | Give thanks to God for all the opportunities to share
the gospel with the community in Randalstown during Christmas events. Please pray for those who came along and have no church connection, that relationships can continue to be developed.

Let’s Pray For
  • Gary and Mary Reid, global mission workers, Kenya | Pray for the church in Maasai land, that they would be built up in the truth of the gospel, strengthened in unity and encouraged in their witness to Christ. Pray that Gary and Mary would know God’s peace in this season of waiting, both for medical retreatment, and their subsequent return to Kenya.
  • The Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC) | Pray for safe travel and a meaningful visit by PW representatives to Budapest and Beregszász from 2nd – 6th February. Pray for their meetings with leaders of the Transcarpathia Reformed Church and for their visits to projects in support of those most affected by the Russia-Ukraine war.

27th Jan – 2nd Feb

Please pray for University College Dublin (UCD) Mission Week from the 27th – 31st January. There are a series of events happening including tea & coffee mornings, lunch talks, Ceilís, football tournaments, testimonies, talks and more. Pray for University of Limerick (UL) students coming back after their Christmas break this week. The CU will have a social night, inviting non-Christian friends and classmates. Please pray they would come along to connect with the CU and engage with the gospel

Coleraine CU Events Week

Our CU motto is “to know God and to make Him known”. On our campus we have such a unique opportunity to reach out to our fellow students and classmates with the good news of the gospel. Throughout the year we build up connections with countless individuals and seek to share Christ with them.

At the end of February, we hope to run an events week on campus from the 24th-28th. This week is dedicated to reaching out and showing others God’s love in a variety of ways. Our theme for the week is “Searching for Hope”. Many students are looking to the world to find their purpose, their identity and their hope but ultimately come up empty, which is why this theme is of great importance to this generation to show that true hope can be found only through Jesus. Throughout the week we aim to:
-       Host 2 lunch bars every day, where food will be provided for students, and Steve McGall will speak on why we as Christians place our hope in Jesus, rather than what this world has to offer. Some students will also be sharing their testimonies and there will be an opportunity for questions and answers.
-       Run different events such as a dessert night, quiz night and regular CU. John T Graham will be coming to speak at these looking at the topics of “Where is hope; in suffering, when feeling unworthy, beyond this life.”
-       Host a “Grill a Christian” evening where 4 Christians from various walks of life will be answering questions on many tough topics such as marriage, grief and sexuality.

How can you support:
Prayer
-       For everyone sharing God’s word during the week, especially remembering Steve McGall and John T. Graham. That they would be filled with God’s wisdom and courage as they prepare and share.
-       That God would soften the hearts of many students and convict them of their need of Christ. That their hearts and minds would be open to the word of God.
-       Practically, that God would provide all that we need for the week, both spiritually and physically.
-       For salvation. We long for a campus won for the Lord, so please pray faithfully that God would bring many to Him.

Practically
-       As a CU we rely on our own fundraising and donations to run our outreach events and weekly events. If you wish to support us financially, please see Richard for details of how you can give.

-       For help with how to support physically with baked goods or lunch items, please see Richard for details:

Thank you so much for your continued support for our CU, God bless.

Let’s Pray For Drum, Cootehill and Kilmount (Rev Daryl Edwards) |

Pray for plans to take part in the "Patrick’s story" initiative in March
as these congregations think of his story of slavery and freedom, the search for meaning, forgiveness and faith – and how it points them to the bigger story of the gospel.

Tracey Nicholl, deaconess | Give thanks for Tracey Nicholl and her ongoing service as a deaconess in St. James’ Presbyterian Church in Ballymoney. Pray for continued help, strength, perseverance and fruitfulness.

Let’s Pray For
  • Moderator | Pray for the services being led by the Moderator at Kilkeel and Mourne congregations today. Remember also the
Moderator as he embarks on a busy itinerary for the Presbytery Tour of Ballymena starting on Monday. Pray for him as he visits various congregations, schools and organisations in the community and meets with key figures in civic society.
  • Worship: Duty and joy | “Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation”. Psalm 95:1. As we
worship today ask God to help us to do so as joyful duty, with hearts that want to declare him worthy of our praise.
  • Edwin and Anne Kibathi, global mission workers, England | Give thanks for the leadership training course that took place earlier this month in Luton, with participants drawn from all PCEA UK Outreach congregations. Pray for Edwin and Anne as they take a period of leave in Kenya during February and as Edwin travels to Northern Kenya and Uganda to bring encouragement to pastors and evangelists gathered from remote areas.
  • The Presbyterian Church of Brazil (IPB) | The IPB is the largest of the Presbyterian denominations in Brazil with over 5,000 congregations and 1 million members. Give thanks for its church planting vision, pray that many will be reached with the good news and come to know Christ as Saviour.
