Let’s Pray For Volker and Jinhyeog Glissmann, global mission workers, Southern Africa 
Pray for Volker as he is involved in planning the translation of two biblical literacy courses, ‘Knowing God’ and ‘Knowing Jesus’, into the Chichewa language for use in Malawi, both in grassroots training and in the TEEM ministry in prisons.

United Bible Training College (UBTC), Pakistan 
​Give thanks for PCI’s longstanding partnership with UBTC which has a strategic role in the training of women in the church. Pray for Salma Andrew in her role as Principal and that the staff and students would know God guiding, providing and watching over all their endeavours.

On the Blog this week, I will be mentioning a bible study book for our new series -
“Who Are You Jesus? I Am …”
I will not be following the book in detail but you may find it a helpful companion to the series.
There is nothing complicated in the study but it will take a bit of time to use it properly. There is a week of study for each I Am saying, but I reckon you would be doing well to complete it in the month between studies. I will make reference to it on the blog after each Sunday. You can buy it in local bookstores or on Amazon (link below) Normally £11.99 but on special offer on Amazon at £9.56 at the moment. On Sunday we will be thinking about Jesus as The Bread Of Life and this is one way to feast on Him.

Let’s Pray For Tom Dowling, Irish mission worker, Kilkenny
Please pray for the weekly street outreach, that people will engage well and that further opportunities for follow-up will arise. Pray for the salvation of those who are hearing the gospel through door-to-door visitation and give thanks for church members who take part in this outreach.

Craigavon 
An evangelistic course called ‘3,2,1’ commences at the end of January. Please pray that members of our church family will invite friends to come with them and that, through the course, more people will come to see life the way Jesus does.

Let’s Pray For Moderator    Pray for Sunday schools starting up again in the new year and for fresh enthusiasm in both children and teachers. Pray too for organisations presenting the claims of Christ to many young people across the island.

Worship: Part of something bigger   “Praise the Lord, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples”. Psalm 117:1. 
As we worship today ask God to increase our awareness that we participate in the worship of the worldwide people of God.

St Petersburg Christian University, Russia 

Give thanks for the witness of this university over the past 35 years and pray for those who lecture there as they seek to train the church leaders of the future. Pray for the students as they are often far away from home, that they will know God’s peace and enabling.

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Poland (EPCP), PolandGive thanks for the Moderator’s recent visit to PCI’s newest partner, the EPCP. Pray especially for the Christ the Saviour congregation located in Krakow and its pastor, Rev Saško Nezamutdinov.

Let’s Pray For Mental health
The New Year is often not a happy time for everyone, especially those who have problems with their mental health. Give thanks for volunteers as they staff helplines at this particularly demanding time of year, and for resources and television campaigns promoting the importance of seeking help and talking through issues.

Palliative Care 
Give thanks for those medical staff who provide care to those coming to the end of their life. Pray for the Assisted Dying and Euthanasia task group, that they can speak truth and hope into this situation and for the Stormont Committee for Health as they consider the response from the Access to Palliative Care Services, which closes today. Pray that this vital service will continue and be able to respond effectively and compassionately to ease pain and suffering.

General Council
​Pray for the staff of the General Secretary’s department and the Financial Secretary’s department as they carry forward much of the ongoing administration of the denomination. Pray for God’s ongoing grace and wisdom, both in the routine work of the departments and also in the individual and challenging issues that come up from time to time.

Training in Ministry
​The Assignments Panel assigns ministry students to congregations for placements - a vital aspect of students’ preparation for ministry, providing valuable opportunities to learn alongside a supervising minister. Pray for the Panel as it meets on Thursday 16 January, that the Lord would guide its decisions.

JIMMY CARTER

When Jimmy Carter ran for president in 1976, he mentioned almost casually that he was a “born-again Christian.” In an era before the rise of the Christian Right and “evangelical politics,” Carter’s comment sent reporters scurrying to figure out what “born-again” meant.
Other than in 1928 and 1960 when Roman Catholics (Al Smith then John F. Kennedy) ran for president, the only thing voters wanted to know about a candidate’s religion was what mainline denomination he belonged to. Calling oneself “born-again” was too much information in an era where religion was considered a private matter.


After due research, John Chancellor of NBC Nightly News comforted his presumably perplexed viewers, starting his broadcast awkwardly, saying, “We have checked on the religious meaning of Carter’s profound experience. It is described by other Baptists as a common experience, not something out of the ordinary.”
Carter’s candidacy created such an evangelical buzz that Newsweekmagazine deemed 1976 “The Year of the Evangelical.”
Carter died last week at the age of 100.

Let’s Pray For Heather McCracken, deaconess, healthcare chaplaincy 
Pray that those who are ill, in pain, afraid or isolated would know the care and comfort of God. Pray also for all staff at bedsides or on wards, that God would give them patience, skill and compassion. Pray that our hospital chaplains working in busy hospital wards, may be strengthened by God's love to bring blessings to those they encounter.

Cork and Aghada 
​Pray for the leaders and members of Cork and Aghada, the most southerly congregations of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Give thanks for their continued witness and ask that their labours for Christ would be fruitful.
