Sunday 28th June 2020 - Stay Safe In God - Psalm 91

WELCOME
Welcome To Burnside At Home
And thank you to everyone who is involved in our time of worship today.
We are still dealing with Lockdown & Social Distancing and Even though restrictions are being relaxed almost every day, still we are unsure of the future.
Church buildings are permitted to open from tomorrow for Church Services, but the overwhelming view at the moment (from our congregation) is that it is too soon to start meeting together. Therefore we are going to proceed cautiously and safely, and take our time before resuming Sunday services in our church Building.
With this in mind please be patient as we make plans to reopen. Many of you are still shielding and therefore Burnside At Home will continue over the summer.

WELCOME
Welcome to Burnside At Home
That is the way that I introduce all these times of worship.
I came up with that phrase because
My natural instinct is to say “Good Morning”
But I know that many of you are watching at all sorts of different times.

I tuned into one service recently and the greeting was
Hello Good Morning, Good Afternoon and Good Evening
Which I think just about covers all the options.

The end of the service is not so problematic
Because I end with a Benediction which is a blessing for the week ahead
But recently on the Blog, Lynne left a comment and ended by typing

Love to all at Burnside and beyond!!

Apart from it sounding like something Buzz Lightyear might say,
I thought it was a perfect greeting,
Because during these times of worship we are privileged to welcome the usual every Sunday Burnside Attenders, the regular Burnside visitors and others who have never been to Burnside but who now worship online with us.

So as we worship today,
I borrow Lynne’s words

Love to all at Burnside And Beyond
CALL TO WORSHIP

Let we who live with faith in God proclaim,
"Lord, You are my refuge and my fortress,
my God I will trust forever."
Let we who trust in the Lord know that holy love surrounds us.
God's protection will follow us throughout our days.
When we call out to the Lord,
We know that we are heard.
God is with us in every trial and temptation,
Therefore we will rejoice in the salvation of the Almighty! Amen!
OPENING PRAYER
Lord help us to dwell in your shelter
You are our refuge and strength
PRAISE
My Dwelling Place (Psalm 91)
Keith & Kristyn Getty
My dwelling place is God Most High
My refuge and my fortress
When plague and pestilence draw nigh
I'm hidden in His Presence

When terrors fall and arrows fly
His shield will be my safety
When stones across my pathway lie
On angels' wings I'm carried

My dwelling place is God Most High

A present help in danger
I rest secure in love's pure light
Beneath my Master's favor

He freed me from the fowler's snare

Where sin and shame had bound me
Deceived I'd made my refuge there
Till fearless He came for me

Wonderful, powerful

My hope and my defender
Mighty God, Emmanuel
My dwelling place forever
My dwelling place is God Most High

I'll never seek another

For I am His and He is mine
My heart He'll keep forever
I know the Name on Whom I call

He promises to answer

With life He satisfies my soul
And crowns me with His pleasure
Wonderful, powerful

My hope and my defender

Mighty God, Emmanuel
My dwelling place forever
Wonderful, powerful

My hope and my defender

Mighty God, Emmanuel
My dwelling place forever
My dwelling place forever

BIBLE READING

Psalm 91 - Joyce McMullan

Psalm 91
1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.[a]
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 Surely he will save you
    from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
4 He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
5 You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you.
8 You will only observe with your eyes
and see the punishment of the wicked.
9 If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,”
and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you,
no disaster will come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
12 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on the lion and the cobra;
you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
14 “Because he[b] loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble,
I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”

INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Burnside At Home

We are still dealing with Lockdown & Social Distancing
Even though restrictions are being relaxed almost every day.
We have world wide protests and people looking for Justice.

So as we worship today,
I want us to ask,
“How Do We Respond To Injustice?”
CALL TO WORSHIP

As we prepare to worship,
The Psalmist has a great message for us in Psalm 95
Where he encourages us to come to God and worship,
To soften our hearts to his word so that we can respond.

Glenda will read Psalm 95

Psalm 95
1 Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
2 Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
3 For the LORD is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
4 In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
5 The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker;
7 for he is our God
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care.
Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as you did at Meribah,
as you did that day at Massah in the desert,
9 where your fathers tested and tried me,
though they had seen what I did.
10 For forty years I was angry with that generation;
I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray,
and they have not known my ways.”
11 So I declared on oath in my anger,
“They shall never enter my rest.”
PRAISE

Psalm 98 Sing To God New Songs Of Worship
Sing To God New Songs Of Worship
All His Deeds Are Marvellous;
He Has Brought Salvation To Us
With His Hand And Holy Arm:
He Has Shown To All The Nations
Righteousness And Saving Power;
He Recalled His Truth And Mercy
To His People Israel.

Sing To God New Songs Of Worship
Earth Has Seen His Victory;
Let The Lands Of Earth Be Joyful
Praising Him With Thankfulness:
Sound Upon The Harp His Praises,
Play To Him With Melody;
Let The Trumpets Sound His Triumph,
Show Your Joy To God The King!
OPENING PRAYER

Father, help us to offer worship that is pleasing to You.
You want more than singing and a gift in the offering.
You desire justice!
So stir our hearts, to offer You true worship
that provides service to the poor,
the widow, the slave, the prisoner, the hungry,
the thirsty, the naked and the homeless (Matthew 25:31-46).
Let our acts of compassion roll like a river.
Let us offer worship
that is woven into obedience
because anything less than obedience is self-made,
self-centered, and self-created religion.
You reject this man-centered worship.
If we engage in this false religion,
the end result is bondage.
So we pray our lives will be marked by true worship,
and we pray this real worship will free the oppressed
around us in the name of Jesus, the King of the Kingdom.
Amen

I’m Humbled By Your Mercy And I’m Broken Inside
Once Again I Thank You
Once Again I Pour Out My Life

Now You Are Exalted To The Highest Place
King Of The Heavens, Where One Day I’ll Bow
But For Now I Marvel At Your Saving Grace
And I’m Full Of Praise Once Again
I’m Full Of Praise Once Again

And Once Again I Look Upon The Cross Where You Died
I’m Humbled By Your Mercy And I’m Broken Inside
Once Again I Thank You
Once Again I Pour Out My Life [2]

LORD’S PRAYER
Rea Houston
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
Where would you like to be today?
PRAISE
Eileen plays a medley of  I Know Who Holds The Future & Yesterday, Today and Forever
OFFERING

Today in Amos 5 we will discover that God is very particular about what we offer to him in worship
So we do not just offer money to God,
We offer our lives.
We offer our seeking after Justice,

God says,
Amos 5:21-24 (NIV 1984)
21 “I hate, I despise your religious feasts;
I cannot stand your assemblies.
22 Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings,
I will not accept them.
Though you bring choice fellowship offerings,
I will have no regard for them.
23 Away with the noise of your songs!
I will not listen to the music of your harps.
24 But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!

Let us pray.
Lord may our worship be acceptable to you.
May we bring Justice to this world as we live for you
May you accept our offering and our lives
As we present them to you now.
AMEN
BIBLE READING

Amos 5:1-27
Amos 5 (NIV 1984)
A Lament and Call to Repentance
1 Hear this word, O house of Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:
2 “Fallen is Virgin Israel,
never to rise again,
deserted in her own land,
with no one to lift her up.”
3 This is what the Sovereign LORD says:
“The city that marches out a thousand strong for Israel
will have only a hundred left;
the town that marches out a hundred strong
will have only ten left.”
4 This is what the LORD says to the house of Israel:
“Seek me and live;
5 do not seek Bethel,
do not go to Gilgal,
do not journey to Beersheba.
For Gilgal will surely go into exile,
and Bethel will be reduced to nothing.”
6 Seek the LORD and live,
or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire;
it will devour,
and Bethel will have no one to quench it.
7 You who turn justice into bitterness
and cast righteousness to the ground
8 (he who made the Pleiades and Orion,
who turns blackness into dawn
and darkens day into night,
who calls for the waters of the sea
and pours them out over the face of the land–
the LORD is his name–
9 he flashes destruction on the stronghold
and brings the fortified city to ruin),
10 you hate the one who reproves in court
and despise him who tells the truth.
11 You trample on the poor
and force him to give you grain.
Therefore, though you have built stone mansions,
you will not live in them;
though you have planted lush vineyards,
you will not drink their wine.
12 For I know how many are your offenses
and how great your sins.
You oppress the righteous and take bribes
and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts.
13 Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times,
for the times are evil.
14 Seek good, not evil,
that you may live.
Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you,
just as you say he is.
15 Hate evil, love good;
maintain justice in the courts.
Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy
on the remnant of Joseph.
16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD God Almighty, says:
“There will be wailing in all the streets
and cries of anguish in every public square.
The farmers will be summoned to weep
and the mourners to wail.
17 There will be wailing in all the vineyards,
for I will pass through your midst,”
says the LORD.
The Day of the LORD
18 Woe to you who long
for the day of the LORD!
Why do you long for the day of the LORD?
That day will be darkness, not light.
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion
only to meet a bear,
as though he entered his house
and rested his hand on the wall
only to have a snake bite him.
20 Will not the day of the LORD be darkness, not light–
pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?
21 “I hate, I despise your religious feasts;
25 “Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings
forty years in the desert, O house of Israel?
26 You have lifted up the shrine of your king,
the pedestal of your idols,
the star of your god–
which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,”
says the LORD, whose name is God Almighty.
PRAYER FOR OTHERS

Prayer of Lament

Holy, Perfect God,
We admit that we put other things above you in our lives.
We say we long for you,
but we actually long for more money and more comfort.
Lord, you will come with darkness for us
if our hearts remain captive to anything but you.
We confess that we are openly rebellious against you.
We are fallen, never to rise again unless you lift us up.
Lord, we have failed to worship you with our hearts.
Our religious gatherings are hollow
because our hearts are slaves to lesser things.
We pay you a visit on Sunday,
but we long to go home to our other gods.
Lord God, we confess that we break your heart.
We gather before you half-heartedly,
waiting to go back to worshipping ourselves.
When we truly worship you,
we will seek good and not evil.
We will hate evil and love good.
Lord God, have mercy.
Renew our hearts within us.
Make us long for you, our God.
Amen.
PRAISE

In a moment or two we are going to discover what God wants and what he doesn’t want in our worship
In this song Matt Redman considers what our worship would look like if we got back to the heart of worship.

Heart Of Worship
Verse 1
When the music
fades, all is stripped away
And I simply come
Longing just to bring
something that's of worth
That will bless Your heart

Pre-Chorus
I'll bring You more than a song
For a song in itself
is not what You have required
You search much deeper within
Through the way things appear
You're looking into my heart

Chorus
I'm coming back to the
heart of worship
And it's all about You, it's
all about You Jesus
I'm sorry, Lord, for the
thing I've made it
When it's all about You, it's
all about You Jesus

Verse 2
King of endless worth
no one could express
How much You deserve
Though I'm weak and poor
all I have is Yours
Ev'ry single breath

(Repeat Pre-Chorus & Chorus)
MESSAGE

Based around Amos 5 From the Message
PRAISE

We finish with an old song by Graham Kendrick
I remember singing this as a teenager.

O Lord The Clouds Are Gathering

It is is a cry for mercy
We acknowledge the coming judgement of God and
We cry out for Mercy
And pray that Justice Will flow
O Lord The Clouds Are Gathering

O Lord, the clouds are gathering
The fire of judgment burns
How we have fallen!
O Lord, you stand appalled to see
Your laws of love so scorned
And lives so broken

Have mercy, Lord, (Men)
Have mercy, Lord, (Women)
Forgive us, Lord, (Men)
Forgive us, Lord (Women)
Restore us, Lord (All)
Revive your church again
Let justice flow (Men)
Let justice flow (Women)
Like rivers (Men)
Like rivers (Women)
And righteousness like a never failing stream (All)

O Lord, over the nations now
Where is the dove of peace?
Her wings are broken
O Lord, while precious children starve
The tools of war increase
Their bread is stolen

Chorus

O Lord, dark powers are poised to flood
Our streets with hate and fear
We must awaken!
O Lord, let love reclaim the lives
That sin would sweep away
And let your kingdom come

Chorus

Yet, O Lord, your glorious cross shall tower
Triumphant in this land
Evil confounding
Through the fire your suffering church display
The glories of her Christ
Praises resounding!

Chorus
BENEDICTION
(inspired by Amos 5)

Now, go forth from this place with renewed inspiration to do the work of God.
Seek good, not evil, love goodness, and establish justice.
This the greatest offering we can make;
letting justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever flowing stream.
Go in peace, with love for our neighbors.

INTRODUCTION
Welcome To Burnside At Home
And thank you to everyone who is involved in our time of worship today.
I think this must be the most people that have been involved in one of our recordings so far. And a huge thank you to everyone who has been so willing to help out week after week.
There are 2 things that make Burnside At Home so special.
The first is the Word of God,
That brings us hope week after week
And the second thing is the church, you the people.
As you take part we are all blessed.
So we pray for God’s blessing to be upon us today,
That although as a church we are scattered,
We come together in Spirit and In Truth to worship God.

Our service is built around the Lord’s Prayer today.
Later on we are going to look at the prayer in detail,
But throughout our worship we are going to be reminded of phrases from the prayer,
Phrases that will draw us closer to God.
And then we will be saying the prayer together near the end.
CALL TO WORSHIP

As we come to worship our prayer is
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;

That God’s name would be holy
As we lift up that name and worship Him.
PRAISE

We begin the service with a stunning version of the Lord’s Prayer sung by Andrea Bocelli
OPENING PRAYER

Lord thank you for prayer
Today teach us to pray
Help us to rely on you
And find the answers in you
Forgive us even in times of extreme like this pandemic
when we do not turn to you.
Help us to repent today.

And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.

Lord we all need your forgiveness
COMING UP
So what is coming up in our service this week?
Well we have a very special version of the Lord’s Prayer coming up at the end of our worship.
Laura is going to read from Matthew Chapter 6
So let us worship God together.
WHY JESUS?

Jesus hears and answers our prayers.
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

Do you ever meet someone who is difficult to talk to?
Jesus helps us what to say to God

There will still be a Children's Message as part of the service but we also have this 20 minute Sunday School from Campaigners Northern Ireland. You can either allow children to watch on a 2nd screen while you listen to the sermon, but better by far is to watch together and learn the songs and talk about the story.
Even if you are not of Sunday School age, I know of several adults who have enjoyed going back to Sunday School as last few weeks.  Thanks to Laura at Campaigners for providing this.

INTRODUCTION
Today we are into a new Month,

This is the 14th Service since we entered lockdown
And our Theme is Faith Over Fear

It started off this week as Faith Not Fear,
But I very quickly realised that we can’t simply swap fear for Faith.
There are lots of things that we should fear at the moment
The fear that we have is helping us stay alive.
But the problem comes when that fear takes over and stops us living.
So Faith isn’t instead of fear.
Faith is Over Fear.
Faith gives us a perspective on life
Faith enables us to deal with the fear that we have

So today I encourage you to find faith
And put faith over everything else in your life.
CALL TO WORSHIP
We believe in God the Father,
who reveals his love to us in Jesus Christ.
We believe in God the Son,
who pours out God's Holy Spirit on us.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
who teaches us God's truth.

We believe in one God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Who this day brings us Faith over Fear
Amen.
OPENING PRAYER

Mysterious God
power behind all we see
grace beyond all we know
love before all we meet,
We cannot comprehend your majesty
we only know your presence in our lives:
you, who knew us before we were born
you, who will cradle us after our last breath…
We cannot encompass your glory
instead we marvel at all the works your hand has made
and we worship and adore you.

It seems too good to be true
that you would care for mere mortals like us…
in our messy lives
often caught-up in trivialities,
that you would mould us in your own image
social creatures with a divine spark…
So good, we’d rather not believe:
rather not see your image in those around us
crying out for love and companionship
rather not see your wisdom underpinning creation
groaning at our wanton waste and exploitation

God above all, help us with our unbelief
our incredulity
our self-preserving acts
which isolate and harm…

Pour mercy into our hearts and souls
giving us eyes to see and ears to hear
your gift
in every person
every place
every moment;
For your greatness is seen in all the world:
may our words and actions be our praise of you
reaching up and out
into your Kingdom,
May our Faith in You be over all our Fear
OPENING PRAISE

And Can It Be?
And can it be that I should gain
An int’rest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain--
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

Refrain:
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

’Tis myst’ry all: th’ Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above--
So free, so infinite His grace--
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray--
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

COMING UP

Coming Up In Our Service Today
Louise Glenn joins us once again to sing Cornerstone.
Rev. Terry McMullan is sharing about Malawi
And Jasmine Morris is playing Violin

WHY JESUS?

Jesus is the light of the world

"God is light; in him there is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5).
"The LORD is my light and my salvation-- whom shall I fear?" (Psalms 27:1).
CHILDREN’S MESSAGE
This children’s message was sent to the Key Worker & Vulnerable children who are in Portstewart Primary School each day
PRAISE

Though I Feel Afraid - Ian White
THOUGH I FEEL AFRAID
Of territory unknown,
I know that I can say
That I do not stand alone.
For Jesus, You have promised
Your presence in my heart;
I cannot see the ending,
But it’s here that I must start.

And all I know is You have called me,
And that I will follow is all I can say.
I will go where You will send me,
And Your fire lights my way.

What lies across the waves
May cause my heart to fear;
Will I survive the day,
Must I leave what’s known and dear?
A ship that’s in the harbour
Is still and safe from harm,
But it was not built to be there,
It was made for wind and storm.

BIBLE READING
Mark 5:35-43
35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?”

36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”

37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
38 When they came to the home of the synagogue ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly.
39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.”
40 But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was.
41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished.
43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat

Cornerstone - Louise Glenn
Louise Glenn joins us from Bristol and sings Cornerstone. You can find the words below if you would like to join in.
At a time when we are focused on Faith over Fear, Louise sings,
Our Hope Is Built On Nothing Less Than Jesus Blood And Righteousness.

My Anchor holds within the veil.

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust is Jesus' name

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust is Jesus' name

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Savior's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all

When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all
He is Lord
Lord of all, Christ alone

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all
Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all

When he shall come with trumpet sound
Oh, may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless, stand before the throne

Cornerstone
Oh, yeah, in the Saviour's love
He is Lord
Lord of all

Christ alone, Cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm
He is Lord
Lord of all

MESSAGE

Faith Over Fear

36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
Mark 5:36

PRAISE
Great Is Thy Faithfulness
Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness!”
“Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided--
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

BENEDICTION

So now we leave this time of worship
And while so much of the road ahead is uncertain,
the path constantly changing,
we know some things that are as solid and sure
as the ground beneath our feet,
and the sky above our heads.

We know God is love.
We know Faith is places in Jesus
And We know the Holy Spirit takes away fear
Go in peace.
Amen
A LITTLE EXTRA
Getty Family Hymn Sing
Normally we end our services with the Getty Family Hymn Sing but it was not broadcast this week, instead they released this statement.
Today [Tuesday] we will be singing of the good news of Jesus as a family, as we hope you do.
Yet, in light of the deep trials and pain so many in our community are enduring, we will not be broadcasting our hymn-sing online, as an expression of quiet lament and prayer.
We look forward to seeing you all next week.
Keith, Kristyn and the girls.
