Let’s Pray - In this moment
A prayer for ears to hear and eyes to see

Loving Lord,
you have so much to say to us,
so much to show us,
so much to teach us,
through our experience of these last few months.
But sometimes our ears are deaf to your gentle prompting,
our eyes are blind to what you want to reveal to us,
our hearts are so indifferent we shy away from your redirecting touch.
We simply want to get back to normal,
continue as if nothing had ever happened,
forget the trials by which you teach us your ways.
It is so much easier that way,
we don’t have to stop to think, pause to consider, dwell to assess.
Instead, we can fall back on what we know,
settle for staggering forward again into familiar routines,
stumbling along in reliable ruts and grinding grooves.
Break through our stubbornness and foolishness;
strengthen knees enfeebled by the weight of yesterday’s burdens
so that we might walk with purpose into tomorrow’s world.
Shatter our desire for safety,
give grace that we may grow,
faith that we might follow,
insight that inspires.
Give us ears to hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
May our eyes be blessed because they see,
and our ears because they hear,
and our hearts because they are open to learn from you.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Let’s Pray for Ministers
Give thanks for ministers who have been teaching and preaching God’s Word and offering pastoral care in very difficult circumstances, asking that God would continue to bless their laboursfor him.
Pray that ministers will know rest and renewal during the summer months, asking that they will be re-energised for the work that lies ahead in the new church year from September.

Beside The Burn
Psalm 3 Part 5
There Is Salvation Psalm 3 v 7,8

Frances On Friday
Every Friday Frances shares a song with us.
Picture
Last week, while enjoying the tranquil setting of the River Bann as it flowed towards the sea, we were aware of the presence of ‘those who go down to the sea in ships.’
Some boats were secured in their allotted moorings, others were being prepared by their owners for the next voyage, while the remainder sailed past in the sunlight.
Consequently, it was a surprise to see a boat drifting uncontrollably while one of its occupants shouted towards a passing craft, ‘Can you help us?’ A rope was thrown and the boat in question was towed safely to shore.
The following day there were reports in the media about a potential collision between the Larne-Stranraer Ferry and a Submarine. This was averted due to the diligence of the ship’s ‘look-out,’ the person who must, by sight, keep a constant watch for danger.
Last Saturday the Coastguard was called to Portstewart to assist three swimmers who were experiencing problems.
On each occasion there was a pleasing outcome, but the result could have been so different if there had been no-one available to give help, no-one to call upon.
So it is with life. What if we had no-one to approach, no-one to give help and leadership in the many problems and difficulties we encounter? But we do have help in our challenges as our Quote today, taken from Genesis 28:15, assures us, ‘I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go.’
The lyrics of today’s Hymn ‘Will your anchor hold in the storms of life?’ suggest that personal stability can only come from the right foundation, the writer being inspired by the words of Hebrews 6:19; ‘We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.’
Frances.

Thank You
Thank you to everyone who has logged on during Lockdown and become part f our little blog community, the blog sort of happened by accident but you have been very loyal and I appreciate the time that you have taken each day. Many of you have embraced the blog as part of your daily routine, with many of you having breakfast and then turning to the blog, others turn to it last thing at night and many have no set routine but check in at some stage during the day. You have listened to Beside The Burn as we have studied the bible together, you have also watched videos, listened to songs and podcasts and read articles.

I want to thank Wilma and Frances for their regular contributions each week, they have brought a personal touch that so many of you have appreciated. Also thank you to everyone who sent in poems or songs or anything else that was included in the Blog. I have to say I never thought my ministry would involve creating Jigsaws, but the Jigsaw has been the surprise of the Lockdown Blog.
There will be no regular blog for the next three weeks as I take a break, there might be an occasional post but not everyday and not with the same detail. This is not the end of the Blog but whenever we return to services in the church building and we come further out of lockdown, it will have to change slightly as there will not be as much time available to put it together. I’ll work out what that means for us but this has been a real pleasure, that even though we have been in lockdown and not able to get together, this little daily blog has somehow kept us together. Even when we do start meeting in the church building there will initially only be Sunday morning services, so hopefully Beside The Burn will continue as a means for us to study God’s word each week.
Thank you all for the community and fellowship that exists in Burnside as we seek to follow our Saviour as his disciples and I hope you enjoy the blog today, and enjoy the break and see you digitally in a few weeks time.
Richard

What is the song of your heart? Whatever matters most to us, our deepest desires and longings -- these are the spiritual lines of melody and harmony that form the soundtrack of our hearts. In this sermon clip from Sing! 2017, Paul David Tripp calls us to “surrender your song to the greater song of the Redeemer.” We are made to sing, and we are saved to sing. God transforms the song of our hearts into one of praise for his glorious grace.

Beside The Burn
God Answers Prayer Psalm 3 v 4
A five minute bible study on Psalm 3

Prayer
On Wednesday the articles and videos on the Blog are related to prayer.

Let’s Pray In this moment

A prayer of confession from a world stopped in its tracks
All sovereign God,
we come before you humbled by the experience of coronavirus and lockdown.
Our world has been stopped in its tracks:
so much of what we take for granted suddenly became uncertain;
so many of the plans we made have not prevailed,
our lives really feel like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
We confess we do not like the sense of not being in command,
we are reluctant to release control even to you,
we see so many ways in which we have been proud, boastful and foolish.
Forgive us for our lack of faith that has been revealed,
for the restlessness in our hearts that has been uncovered,
for the many ways in which we stubbornly rebel against you.
Teach us what it means to seek first your Kingdom,
for your Kingdom to come and your will to be done,
to patiently allow your Kingdom to grow like a tiny seed to a great tree.
For too often our thoughts are not your thoughts,
our ways are not your ways,
as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so your ways and will tower above our puny imaginings.
For you reign, rule and overrule,
for your glory and our good,
and that your grace might be known to the ends of the earth.
In Jesus’ Name.
Amen

Let’s Pray for Wisdom in witness
Give thanks for a greater awareness among many of the fragility of life and our need of God.
Pray that God would give many opportunities among friends, neighbours and colleagues for wise and winsome witness to the difference faith and hope in Christ can bring to life and wider society.

Beside The Burn
Psalm 3 v 3 God Protects

Wilma’s Thoughts On Tuesday
Every Tuesday Wilma share some of her thoughts with us.
Last week I mentioned a chorus about a door that is open, this week I am writing about a door that was closed.

A few years ago my niece and I celebrated our special birthdays by flying to the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides. The main attraction in going there was the flight on a small plane which lands on the beach. On one of our walks on the Hebridean Way, we noticed a small cottage by a lake, the door was closed, a swan was standing tapping on it with her beak. We were fascinated and stood to watch as she tapped and waited, repeating her efforts. The owner eventually opened the door and threw out some food for her to eat. Her cygnet was waiting closeby and soon joined her.  Obviously this was a routine for the persistent swan.
Picture
I am reminded of a parable in Luke ch 11 which Jesus told to his disciples about a person who went to a friend's house at night to ask him for bread to feed an unexpected visitor. The friend refused and said his door was closed and his children were in bed for the night, but because of the man's persistence he decided to give him the bread. On another occasion Jesus told a story in Luke ch 18 about a persistent widow who was seeking justice. She kept going to the local judge with her request but he refused. Eventually, because of her persistence he ensured she got justice.

Jesus told these stories to remind us we should always pray and not give up. Last year, in Burnside church many participated in "The Forty Days of Prayer" programme using the booklet "Catching the Wave". After completing it, Richard reminded us to continue praying for the particular persons or big issues we had prayed for during the forty days. The Try Praying banner is still on the outside wall of our church.

Lockdown has provided us with more time than ever to "pray without ceasing".
Wilma

Beside The Burn

The week we are turning to Psalm 3 and as David faces opposition and flees for his life, we ask is there really Salvation in God

Let’s Pray for Leaders and Managers
Give thanks for those who continue to give leadership in every sphere of life as they continue to decide on many difficult matters and carefully guide in days of ongoing uncertainty.
Pray for those who manage others, asking that God would help them be caring in every situation and build increasing confidence in those who look to them for leadership as they resume working life.
